The emerging trend of rapid testing and screening in agriculture is indicative of the many challenges facing farmers when dealing with pests and diseases. Crops infected with diseases can make the hard work of farmers for the entire year go to waste. Professor Ta-Te Lin of the National Taiwan University's Department of Biomechatronics Engineering has led a team to develop the "Intelligent Pest Detection and Identification System," a so-called "demon-revealing mirror" capable of identifying any pests that have infiltrated a greenhouse or a net house.

The research team installed cameras in front of sticky traps placed at different locations in greenhouses or net houses. Using AI image processing technology, they monitor and analyze the number and types of pests caught by these adhesive traps. Notifications are sent to farmers in real-time through a special app, enabling them to monitor the environmental data and pest activity within their greenhouses or net houses. On average, the system transmits one image every 30 minutes to one hour, and updates the data promptly. Currently, the system has been implemented in 30 greenhouses or net houses for crops such as tomatoes, mangoes, oncidiums, and flamingo lilies, saving farmers much time and effort in monitoring pest problems.
